AUSTIN, Texas — Austin Independent School District could potentially save $43 million in the next fiscal year by consolidating schools, according to an internal

Austin Independent School District could potentially save $43 million in the next fiscal year by consolidating schools, according to an internal audit conducted by Gibson Consulting . The audit suggests that $30 million of the savings would come from elementary schools and $13 million from middle schools .

Gibson Consulting describes the consolidation as a long-term solution, noting that AISD has a lower average number of students per school—600—compared to peer districts such as Fort Bend, Northeast, Katy, Round Rock, and Leander. The firm argues that Austin's numerous smaller, older schools could be consolidated to larger schools to achieve cost savings. "While small schools have long been cherished by Austin communities, larger schools allow districts to enjoy economies of scale and be more efficient in their spending," said Greg Gibson of Gibson Consulting during a board meeting presentation.Additionally, Gibson noted that AISD could save an extra $1.7 million by disposing of some of its portable classrooms, as 305 of the 585 portables are deemed inefficient. "Portables are intended to provide temporary space for growing districts or for student relocation during construction or renovation projects," said Gibson. Gibson Consulting research revealed Austin ISD has seen a decline in students from 80,000 to 70,000 over the last seven years. Gibson cautioned that these savings figures could change based on discussions at state and local levels.
