EVO 4 from Audient is one of the best-value audio interfaces and its a whole heap of fun to use. If you know a budding and talented musician, this little box could set them on the road to fame.
When recording, the user can monitor the sound by plugging in a pair of headphones to the zero-latency monitoring output. The monitoring feature makes it easy to hear what’s being played alongside audio from the computer, making multitracking so easy.
The preamps are incredibly impressive for the money and can even handle difficult-to-drive mics like Shure’s SM7B or RØDE’s Procaster. EVO 4 has a sizeable multifunction knob that can adjust the microphone gain and headphone or monitor output.The monitor mix between the microphone inputs and audio from the computer can also be balanced using the knob. I love EVO 4’s monitor mix feature, something often missing on audio interfaces costing much more.
EVO 4 includes a clever Smartgain button that monitors sound levels and sets the perfect gain levels in less than 20 seconds. Gain levels can also be set manually for those who prefer the manual touch. The Smartgain feature works so well that there’s no need to use the gain knob. EVO 4 is straightforward to use and also has control software for Macs and PCs. The control package can change settings and even turn on the 48V phantom power for condenser mics. EVO 4’s software also has a loopback feature and Audient has made a brilliant tutorial video showing how to use it.... [+]At the rear of EVO 4 are two TRS outputs for connecting the unit to a pair of powered monitors so the user can listen back to recordings or monitor live rather than using headphones.
