It wasn’t until years later, while living in Paris and getting to know her now-husband Charles Gout, that Jan would evolve her fashion talents and haute couture roots into a real business.
In 2017, after they both left jobs in advertising, Jan and Gout decided to change careers and settle in a new location. On a holiday with friends to Mexico City, the pair fell in love with its landscape, architecture, culture, and people. They wanted to launch their own collection of accessories and they wanted to do it in Mexico City., named for Jan, is up and running after a soft launch last year.
The bags are beautifully constructed, thanks to Jan’s background in couture-inspired craft, and they will no doubt be popular among those who choose their It bags from smaller, independent labels like Wandler and ByFar, rather than the big name luxury houses. “When we arrived in Mexico City in 2017, there was an underground fashion movement with some talented designers,” Gout notes. “Today it’s a much bigger phenomenon. Like art, architecture, and cuisine, Mexican fashion is increasingly being recognized on an international scale.
