Why is SDGE allowing skyrocketing prices? Attorney Maria Severson says it's time the City of San Diego use it's power, and demand SDG&E explain and document exactly why San Diegans are paying out-of-control rates.
SAN DIEGO – San Diego Gas & Electric Wednesday cited a dramatic increase in natural gas prices over the past year as a major reason ratepayers will likely see a large jump on their bills this month.
New gas and electric rates went into effect Jan. 1. According to SDG&E, the cost per unit of natural gas — known as a therm — more than doubled over the past year, increasing from $2.36 per therm in January 2022 to $5.11 per therm in January 2023. But the controversy comes because the price of natural gas is actually decreasing, yet SDG&E is paying more than before, and passing that increase onto their customers.
San Diegans were already paying the highest gas and electricity rates in the entire United States, and it’s about to get even higher. Attorney Maria Severson wants people to call their councilmembers and demand an audit of SDG&E, as a price hike this drastic should not be acceptable. Severson joined KUSI’s Lauren Phinney on Good Morning San Diego to discuss the price hike in more detail.
