Attorney General Pam Bondi announced the expansion of Joint Task Force Alpha (JTFA) to combat Transnational Criminal Organizations involved in human trafficking and smuggling. Bondi stated that these organizations pose an extreme threat not only to the United States but globally due to their involvement in the trafficking of drugs, weapons, and people.
She also expressed concern over the growing number of fatalities resulting from these operations, as individuals attempting to cross the border are often placed in perilous situations by smugglers, known as 'coyotes.' Bondi emphasized the urgency of the situation during a news conference held in Florida on Thursday, stating, 'These operations are getting people killed.Bondi revealed that JTFA, which was previously focused on combating human smuggling and trafficking, will now encompass the nation's northern border and all maritime borders. To bolster its capabilities, the task force will incorporate agents from the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), effectively increasing its manpower. Since President Donald Trump's inauguration in January, JTFA has successfully charged 56 defendants, including a particularly egregious individual who attempted to smuggle migrants through the Canadian border, described by Bondi as a 'monster.' Other cases involved suspects drugging children with THC to induce sleep during their perilous border crossing attempts. Bondi underscored the government's commitment to aggressively investigating and prosecuting these crimes, stating, 'We are investigating and prosecuting their crimes more aggressively than ever and Joint Task Force Alpha is the tip of the spear.' This week alone, the task force unsealed an indictment against 12 individuals operating a large-scale smuggling ring. These suspects facilitated the illegal entry of immigrants from Cuba into the United States, 'coaching' their clients, including children, who arrived at airports alone and boarded planes en route. Bondi revealed that the group charged up to $40,000 per victim and utilized Zelle for money transfers, amassing over $7 million through this scheme. She estimated that the operation generated over $18 million in cash profits
