The founder of a North Texas adoption agency allegedly offered inmates thousands of dollars to give up their unborn children, according to police.
Jody Hall, 68, who lives in the Central Texas town of Kyle, faces two felony charges of the sale or purchase of a child, according to booking records.The Tarrant County Sheriff’s Office investigated Hall in May for “unethical adoption practices,” according to a statement from the sheriff’s office.The investigation found that Hall was paying money to multiple pregnant Tarrant County inmates to place their unborn children up for adoption with Hall’s agency, according to the statement.
Hall discussed monetary agreements and madedeposits into several inmates’ accounts to get a child for adoption, according to a Tarrant County arrest warrant affidavit.In text messages obtained by police, Hall offered a 24-year-old at Tarrant County jail $100 a week for 25 weeks if she signed forms relinquishing her unborn baby after giving birth, according to the affidavit. Hall told the woman to call her when she went into labor and told her she would meet her at the hospital.
Hall told the inmate it would be an “open” adoption, and told the woman she’d be able to get photos of her child and learn how the child is doing as they grow up, according to the affidavit. Hall allegedly told the woman she could get $2,500 to place the baby up for adoption.The agency’s website states that it has placed over 1,200 children in homes since it was founded in 1995. The site calls Hall a “leader in the adoption industry.
Detectives with the sheriff’s office and the Texas Rangers served two arrest warrants on Hall at her home in Kyle, according to the sheriff office’s statement.
