The center focuses on regional history and STEM, serving students, educators and families across the Southeast.
The center is named for Susie Atta , a mathematician from Henry County who dreamed of a place that could show children the possibilities for their futures. Atta’s family made that vision a reality. “Aunt Susie left the funds to build this facility, and she left my dad in charge,” said Kate Killebrew , executive director of the ATTA.
“I tried to work on it while I was still in Dallas, and then I said, ‘Dad, it’s too much work. I’ll move home and head this up.’” Dignitaries, educators and students gathered to celebrate the milestone. The center focuses on regional history and STEM, serving students, educators and families across the Southeast.“It’s just inspiring because when I was growing up in Abbeville, the attitudes weren’t that great about small town living,” Killebrew said. “It’s like, ‘Oh, I’m from Abbeville. I can’t do anything with my life.’ And we didn’t know that the lead engineer who developed the International Space Station was born on a farm in Abbeville. And Dr. Kirby Bland, a world-renowned breast cancer surgeon from Abbeville.” Kids can imagine future careers through the interactive exhibits at The ATTA. A thousand 8th graders across the region will visit in the coming weeks. “Career exploration is so important. And they say that children normally decide what they want to be when they grow up in the eighth grade,” Killebrew said. “And that is why we are hosting ‘Dream It, Do It Day’. We’re busing in up to a thousand eighth graders.” Students will experience different trades during the event. Between 100 and 150 role models will come dressed in their work attire and with their tools to talk to students one-on-one about their daily lives. Alabama Representative Rick Rehm said the value a center like this brings to Abbeville and beyond is immeasurable. “That is so important that you can learn the past, learn those who’ve done things before you, give you the inspiration to learn what we have new now,” Rehm said. “So from math to job training to incorporating with our local industry, this is a win in all directions.” Download the WTVY News4 app to get alerts and stories the moment they are published.
