A powerful atmospheric river is expected to bring heavy rain and snow to Western Washington on Christmas Day, impacting travel and causing blustery conditions.

A potent atmospheric river is set to arrive on Christmas Day , bringing blustery conditions with increasing wind along the coast, through the Inlet, and for some parts of the North Sound. Heavy lowland rain and mountain snow will intensify throughout the morning and into the evening. While Santa will likely make his deliveries in Western Washington before the rain fully sets in, rainfall totals are expected between 1-2 inches throughout the day tomorrow.

Heavy snow is anticipated to impact pass travel beginning tomorrow and potentially lasting through Friday. Winds will be gusty at times with the arrival of the front tomorrow, prompting a high wind watch for coastal regions, the Inlet, and Western Skagit and Whatcom counties. Heavy mountain snow, totaling 1-3 inches, combined with gusty winds is possible, leading to a winter storm warning in effect early Wednesday morning. Travel over the passes is expected to be very difficult in the coming days. It's crucial to monitor weather and road conditions before traveling. A weather alert day is in effect for Wednesday and Thursday due to rain, wind, and snow. The week remains unsettled with additional chances for rain. By New Year's Eve, conditions are projected to be slightly drier, allowing for better viewing of the Space Needle festivities
