Atlantic City Mayor Marty Small Sr. has pleaded not guilty to charges of witness tampering stemming from allegations that he asked his daughter to change her story about alleged abuse by him and his wife. Prosecutors allege that Small asked his daughter to contradict her previous account of being abused by him, knowing he was about to be indicted on the original child abuse charge.
Atlantic County prosecutors allege that Atlantic City Mayor Marty Small Sr. asked his daughter to contradict her previous claim of being abused while knowing he was about to be indicted on the original child abuse charge. Small has pleaded not guilty to the charge of witness tampering. Prosecutors say that in September 2024, while criminal charges for abusing his juvenile daughter, J.S., were pending against him, Small asked his daughter to change her story about the alleged abuse.
Specifically, he allegedly asked her to say that she tripped and fell in her room when she sustained a head injury. This request, according to prosecutors, referred to an alleged incident on January 13, 2024, when Small is accused of hitting his daughter multiple times in the head with a broom, causing her to lose consciousness. The alleged request for his daughter to change her story came just two days before a grand jury indicted both Marty and La'Quetta Small, the city's superintendent of schools, on charges of child abuse. Prosecutors allege that both parents physically and emotionally abused the girl, who was 15 to 16 years old, on several occasions last winter. La'Quetta Small is accused of punching her daughter multiple times in the chest, leaving bruising, dragging her by the hair, and striking her with a belt on her shoulders, leaving marks. Marty Small is accused of punching his daughter in the legs, causing bruising, as well as grabbing her head during an argument, throwing her to the ground, and threatening to throw her down the stairs. Atlantic City Mayor Marty Small Sr. says he's not guilty of witness tampering but is 'guilty' of being a good parent. His attorney, Jordan Barbone, stated, “A father who explains to his child the value of being truthful is only ‘guilty’ of good parenting, not witness tampering.” Small pleaded not guilty in an Atlantic County courtroom. His attorney also said that Small is innocent of the accusations against him. Small walked alone into the courthouse on a bright, cold morning and mostly only offered “no comment” to reporters' questions about his response to the allegations against him.
