) - Thirty-five students from four high schools in Atlanta spent the last three days traveling through Alabama as part of the annual John Lewis Student Civil Rights Pilgrimage. The trip, which began Thursday and wrapped up Saturday, was designed to give students a deeper understanding of Congressman John Lewis, the Civil Rights Movement , and the history that unfolded across Alabama .
During the three-day experience, students visited Selma, Montgomery, and Troy, stopping at several sites tied to the fight for civil rights and voting rights. Organizers said the pilgrimage gives students more than just a history lesson. It allows them to stand in the same places where key moments in the movement happened and better understand the sacrifices made by those who came before them. In Montgomery, the group visited sites including the Freedom Riders Museum, Dexter Avenue King Memorial Baptist Church, and the Alabama State Capitol. The trip ended Saturday with a closing ceremony at the Civil Rights Memorial Center. Representatives with the John and Lillian Miles Lewis Foundation and the Southern Poverty Law Center were also part of the experience, helping guide students through the historical significance of the trip. Organizers say the goal is to help young people connect what they learn in the classroom to real-life places, people, and stories that shaped the nation. The annual pilgrimage honors the legacy of Congressman John Lewis, who was one of the most prominent leaders of the Civil Rights Movement and a strong advocate for educating younger generations about the struggle for justice and equality. For the students involved, the journey served as an opportunity to reflect on the past while thinking about their role in the future.Copyright 2026 WSFA. All rights reserved.
