A search of Cofield’s vehicle turned up 38 stolen checks totaling $43,482. The checks had been made payable to various Atlanta-area businesses. Court documents revealed that the checks had been stolen from the mail and given to Cofield by a co-conspirator, and Cofield was taking them to sell to someone at a meeting place in downtown Mobile.
