Blackburn gave up no runs in eight innings in Friday night’s 3-2 loss to the Cleveland Guardians, with Dany Jimenez getting a blown save in the ninth. It was another gut-punch in for the A’s even if it was a career night for Blackburn. For the record, Kotsay never considered sending Blackburn out for the ninth after throwing 101 pitches, 65 of them strikes, with one walk and three strikeouts.
The pitch count was a career-high, and the eight complete innings broke a glass ceiling of sorts in that Blackburn had never completed the seventh in 39 career starts. He pitched 6 2/3 innings twice this season. He pitched five innings in each of his first five starts and went 6 2/3 innings three times. Blackburn looked to slow his roll a bit after taking losses in his previous two outings after a 5-0 start.
