Paul Blackburn’s strong performance and splitting a series with the Tampa Bay Rays gives the Athletics reason to remain in a good frame of mind despite a 19-52 record.
In the next inning, Austin Pruitt gave up a solo home run to Luke Raley, his 12th, and the Tampa Bay bullpen made it stand up as the Rays got out of town with a split before a crowd of 7,133.
Other than that, Blackburn kept the A’s in the game. Tampa Bay hitters swung and missed 17 times in all and there have been no signs of myriad finger and blister issues which have come up since being named the A’s All-Star representative a year ago. Blackburn got the hook with two outs in the sixth by Kotsay, who went to Richard Lovelady to face the left-handed Josh Lowe. Blackburn threw 104 pitches, breaking 100 for the first time this year, and is relying on a slider more than he ever has.Being even in a tie game looked unlikely early on as the Athletics flailed unsuccessfully against 22-year-old Taj Bradley.
