Oakland wants a big package in return for its young flamethrower.
The Oakland Athletics have started the 2024 season a surprsing 18-21 and are third in the American League West. Despite that, the A's are open for business and are willing to discuss a deal for closer Mason Miller. But they are asking for a ton in return.Oakland is currently asking for "a young player of comparable ability, or a substantial package of multiple youngsters who could be part of the A's future" in exchange for Miller.
The 25-year-old has made 13 appearances this season, and in 16 1/3 innings has struck out 33 hitters, while earning eight saves and posting a 1.10 ERA and a 0.67 WHIP. He regularly hits triple-digits with his fastball and can touch 103 mph, with a devastating slider. Miller is cheap—he's making $740,000 this season, won't be eligible for arbitration until 2026 and Oakland has him under control through the 2029 MLB season.
Aside from the hefty asking price, there is another downside for a team looking to acquire Miller. He missed several months last season with a sprain of the ulnar collateral ligament in his pitching elbow. He didn't require surgery but it was serious enough that Oakland decided to move him into a relief role. Miller came up through the A's system as a starter after being a third-round pick in 2021 out of Gardner-Webb.
Oakland wants a lot in return for Miller and no one has come close to matching the price. He should continue to be a popular trade target over the next few months.
