The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) is leading the investigation into the cause of the devastating Palisades Fire in Malibu, California. Investigators are reviewing video footage, conducting interviews, and appealing to the public for any information that could aid in determining the origin of the blaze.
Investigators with the ATF are actively searching for clues that could pinpoint the cause of the Palisades Fire . Officials providing an update on the Palisades Fire on Wednesday revealed that they have generated over 150 leads as they delve into the cause and progression of the blaze.
Jose Medina, acting special agent in charge of the ATF Los Angeles Field Division, stated that investigators are meticulously combing through video footage from state-owned cameras positioned in the area, videos captured by residents, and social media posts. Medina emphasized the importance of any information, regardless of its apparent significance. He urged individuals who were hiking on nearby trails around Skull Rock on the morning of January 7th to come forward and share their observations, including what they smelled and heard. 'We are talking to individuals about not just what they saw, but what they smelled and they heard,' he said. 'Even if you were in the area and saw or smelled nothing that too could be valuable information,' Medina added. The investigation team has conducted interviews with individuals who initiated the 911 calls, the first responders to the January 7th blaze, as well as those involved in the fire that originated in the area and was extinguished on January 1st. When asked if the rekindling of the January 1st fire was the most probable cause, Medina stated that investigators 'are not leading towards anything right now. We're taking everything in, evaluating all the evidence we received, but it's too early on in the investigation to make any determination.' The ATF continues to urge anyone with information about the Palisades Fire to come forward
