In “Dishwasher 2,” performance artist Brian Feldman asks ticket buyers to do a household chore as an adventure in submersible theater.
Needless to say, “Dishwasher 2: I Pay You” was unique in my theatergoing experience. It was immersive, for sure, but only up to my elbows. The water in his bathroom sink was plentiful and warm, the dinnerware — bowls, spoons, cups, strainer — suitably soiled. And, boy, did I take the assignment seriously. With gusto I squeezed that eco-friendly dishwashing liquid onto Feldman’s food-spattered kitchen ware . And like in the commercials, I made those dishes sparkle.
As its title implies, “Dishwasher 2: I Pay You” isn’t Feldman’s first foray into ceramic hygiene performance art. In the seminal original,it was Feldman who did the housework, visiting ticket holders in their D.C. homes, washing the plates and saucers and then performing a short monologue of their choosing. As a finale, the hosts decided whether he was better at acting or washing. Now, in “Dishwasher 2,” the dinner table has been turned .
