Area residents and researchers are trying to understand how a deadly epidemic landed at their doorstep.
"It would have been better if we knew in advance," Seattle resident Renne Adams said."This has been around for a month, and nobody said anything.""I expect that," she said with resignation.
"This has not gone as smoothly as we would have liked," said Dr. Nancy Messonnier, director of the National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The UW Medicine Virology Lab anticipates being able to test 1,000 to 1,500 samples a day by the end of the week, up from the current 200 a day.
"Testing is the main weapon we have," said Dr. Keith Jerome, who heads the virology division at the medical school's department of laboratory medicine."Until we have a vaccine, this is our major tool.""I just don't trust them," she said.
