The details are still shifting as more info comes out. In its latest update, French authorities said that 2 people are believed to be unaccounted for (revised down from 5-10). Initial interviews with survivors indicated that 65/ 66 people were on board.
Six people have died and 50 were rescued after a boat sank in the Channel in the early hours of Saturday morning, according to the French authorities.
A volunteer on one of the rescue boats said that migrants were using their shoes to try to shift water out of the boat, which was badly overcrowded. Home Secretary Suella Braverman chaired a meeting with the Small Boats Operational Command Gold this morning. French and UK coastguard teams, the French Navy and helicopters responded to the incident, as well as the RNLI and South East Coast Ambulance Service. The RNLI confirmed that a volunteer lifeboat was dispatched from Dover just before 4am on Saturday morning.
The UK’s RNLI boat 1709 picked up ten people, and was already carrying survivors of a different operation on board. Little is known about this operation, but all migrants were reportedly rescued.
