“Twilio has grown at an astonishing rate over the past couple years,” Lawson said in a statement during the initial layoff announcement in September. “It was too fast, and without enough focus on our most important company priorities.” The company hired nearly 3,000 people in 2021 — its employee count in 2020 was 4,629, and by the end of 2021, 7,867 people were at Twilio.
Twilio’s stock is currently valued at $63 a share as of publication time, nearly 25% higher than its price at the start of the year — but still way down from its peak value of $435.29 a share in February 2021.
