Chicago shootings this weekend have left at least six people shot, two fatally, police said.

A suspect exchanged gunfire with a Chicago police officer after allegedly shooting someone on the West Side early Saturday, officials said. CPD said officers responded to a call about shots fired near North and Waller avenues in the North Austin neighborhood around 12:45 a.m. When officers arrived on the scene, they saw someone shooting at a person on the ground, police said. Police said the person shooting then fired at the responding officers, striking their squad car.

It was not immediately clear how many rounds were fired. The suspect fled the scene but was taken into custody a short time later, police said. Police said the person on the ground suffered multiple gunshot wounds and was taken to a local hospital in an unknown condition. No officers were injured, and three guns were recovered from the scene. Charges against the suspect are pending.
