Two swimmers lost their lives, one is still missing, and several others in multiple locations along the Jersey Shore had to be pulled from the waves over the Labor Day weekend due to powerful rip currents that dragged them out to sea.
Beaches were heavily crowded for the holiday weekend, where experts were said to have warned of the dangerously strong rip currents. In Belmar, Ocean County, a chief lifeguard claimed that conditions were so rough over the weekend that multiple swimmers had to be rescued. “When the lifeguards along Fifth Avenue Beach were putting their equipment away to store for the night, they were approached by a bunch of beach patrons screaming that there were people in the water and in distress,” Belmar Chief Lifeguard Harry Harsin said toAs a result, rescue teams were able to pull five people from the dangerous waters to safety. One more person was pulled from the water unresponsive.
The person was a 42-year-old male swimmer, who was transported to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Over in Beach Haven, Ocean County, on Sunday, lifeguards resorted to creating a human chain to embark on a search for a submerged swimmer.
