Conspiracy-minded Republican leaders aren't backing down in the face of election losses and investigations that continue to debunk their claims.
. Some of the material was used in unsuccessful Republican governor candidate Kari Lake’s election challenge and rejected by a judge for lack of evidence.
The three Democratic members of the Senate Elections Committee — Sens. Anna Hernandez, D-Phoenix, Priya Sundareshan, D-Tucson and Juan Mendez, D-Tempe — boycotted the Feb. 23 all-day hearing in part because of the report. The hearings have kept up last year's push by Republicans to revamp election policy to address concerns of alleged 2020 fraud that purportedly caused Trump to lose the presidency.
As far as political impact, it's unclear what the presentations have gained Republicans. After a stinging defeat in top statewide races last November, Republicans like new state party Chair Jeff DeWit have hoped to mend division between those for whom election issues take full priority and more traditional conservatives.
When Sundareshan asked in a Jan. 30 hearing if Busch had allowed county election officials to review and comment on the material she drew from county sources, Rogers shot back, “we’re the election officials.” Following the Senate’s review of the 2020 election in Maricopa County, lawmakers floated about 100 bills last year designed to curb alleged election problems that aren’t based on firm evidence. Former Sen. Paul Boyer, R-Glendale, and former House Speaker Rusty Bowers, R-Mesa, scuttled the most restrictive proposals, like ending early and mailed voting and forcing all voting and ballot counting to take place on Election Day.
House Bill 2096, sponsored by Rep. Selina Bliss, R-Prescott, would require that voters turn in early ballots at a polling location no later than 5 p.m. on the Friday before an election, the same as Swoboda had suggested. House bills 2229 and 2231, both sponsored by Rep. Liz Harris, R-Chandler, would prohibit mail voting and early voting in most forms.
For instance, a member of the public or group that wanted to check on Kari Lake's loss in November could actuallyRepublican candidate for state Treasurer Kimberly Yee but not Lake. Speaking on behalf of Scottsdale lawyer John Thaler, Breger plunged into a complex story involving a drug cartel, election fraud and local elected officials during her 20-minute speech. The plot centered around two women Breger said she and Thaler have investigated. Breger never mentioned a key fact to the lawmakers: The women were Thaler's soon-to-be ex-wife and mother-in-law.
