Tupi, among the oldest living crested seriema birds, celebrated his 45th birthday, or 'hatchday,' June 19, 2024, in South Texas.
The San Antonio Zoo celebrated a special senior last week, a crested seriema named Tupi who has outlived almost all the rest of his species. Tupi celebrated his 45th 'hatchday' on Wednesday, surrounded by staff members with golden party hats, party horns and a painting of Tupi himself. The bird got a personalized cake for the occasion as well, as seen in photos shared by the zoo.
The red-legged, or crested, seriema has a typical lifespan of 20 to 30 years, according to the Zoological Society of East Anglia. The seriema is a South American grassland bird that measures about 3 feet long, according to the Peregrine Fund. But instead of taking to the air to chase down prey, the seriema opts to run and can reach 40 miles per hour.
