Australian share futures were lower, tracking losses in New York, ahead of a busy day of local reports and July’s jobs data. Oil fell below $US84 a barrel, gold slid below $US1900 an ounce; iron ore clung to a $US100 a tonne.
The local currency slid 0.5 per cent, falling below US64.25¢; the Bloomberg dollar spot index edged 0.2 per cent higher.The yield on the US 10-year note was 4 basis points higher to 4.25 per cent near 4.59pm in New York. “Today’s minutes confirmed that the Fed has kept the door open to additional rate hikes despite decelerating price pressures and signs that labour market conditions are beginning to come into better balance,”“This progress has seen the ‘soft landing’ narrative become more popular, and has been reflected in financial markets, which expect the Fed to begin easing policy in the first half of 2024.
The year-to-date return from US government notes and bonds as measured by the Bloomberg Treasury index was negative through Tuesday and poised to widen.TD: “Following the strong jobs report in June, we think job gains likely cooled to +13,000 in July. It is typically a slow month for hiring in July as people depart for the winter holidays, though strong inbound migration adds upside risk to our forecast.
