ASX 200 LIVE: Shares to rise as BHP, Rio jump; investors await US election results

Australian shares climbed at the open, tracking a strong rally on Wall Street led by the US tech giants. The benchmark S&P/ASX 200 Index rose 0.8 per cent, or by 64.8 points to 8192.4 at the start of trade, buoyed by gains in the miners, technology and consumer stocks. The Australian dollar was trading higher at US66.36¢. Overnight in New York, the Nasdaq climbed 1.

While Kamala Harris reportedly has some late momentum, the race is expected to be close and the final result might not be confirmed for several days or weeks. “If the polling is correct, this election could bring the tightest electoral vote margin since 2000 and one of the closest results of all time,” TD Securities said in a note. In commodities, iron ore climbed 2 per cent to $US105.
