Arkansas State and the City of Jonesboro has started a research project to find out if there are too many mosquitos in the area.

Summer might mean you’re headed to the pool, going on a vacation, or just staying at home. But it almost certainly means there’s going to be some mosquitos in the air.

Dr. Tanja McKay is heading up a project with the city to figure out if they should spray for mosquitos. This project relies solely upon the public’s involvement. “We ask that the citizen be at home during the process. We would like them to be involved with setting up the trap, taking down the trap, and seeing what they have collected”.

The team sets up CDC mosquito traps in the late afternoon or dusk in volunteers backyards to collect the samples. “Then we make a decision, are there a lot of mosquitos, are there just a handful, or is it at a threshold where a decision needs to be made," Dr. McKay said. One of the most important pieces to a research project is sample size. Something Jonesboro citizens have done a great job at so far. “Within the last week, at the end of the week, we had over three hundred participants, so we’ve had to close our link for now to make sure we can actually get to these locations," Dr. McKay said.

If you’re interested in learning more about this mosquito research project or how you can keep some bugs out of your back yard, you can talk to Dr. McKay and those working on this project this Friday at the Craighead County Library in Jonesboro from noon until 1 p.m.
