SAN DIEGO — The Astros will meet with free-agent catcher Willson Contreras this week and are interested in signing him, manager Dusty Baker revealed on Monday afternoon, an about-face from four months ago when the skipper voiced concerns over Contreras’ fit inside Houston’s clubhouse.
“People take ‘no’ sometimes as rejection. It wasn’t about that, it was the timing wasn’t right. I stressed that then. But it didn’t come out right,” Baker said on Monday from baseball’s winter meetings. Since Crane parted ways with general manager James Click in November, Contreras has been a primary focus of Houston’s offseason plans, multiple people familiar with Crane’s thinking said., but seems intent on adding more offense at catcher.
