Rookie righthander Hunter Brown likely won't make the Astros' starting rotation for the AL Division Series, but his work out of the bullpen is opening up possibilities as a relief weapon.

Rookie righthander Hunter Brown likely won't make the Astros' starting rotation for the AL Division Series, but his work out of the bullpen is opening up possibilities as a relief weapon.BALTIMORE — Hunter Brown’s second major-league relief appearance could not have come at a better, or worse, time.

Brown, though, escaped the inning without allowing a run to score. In two mound visits, pitching coach Josh Miller and catcher Martín Maldonado reminded Brown to just stick to the plan for each hitter. He froze Jorge Mateo on a 98.5 mph third-strike fastball, got Gunnar Henderson to ground into a force, and induced a ground out against Orioles leadoff man Cedric Mullins.

Brown’s ability to escape trouble portends well for his likely postseason role with the Astros. Although Brown’s first two career outings this season were traditional starts, Houston’s surplus of sublime starting pitchers and the American League Division Series schedule don’t leave room for him in the ALDS rotation, which could include just three starters.
