Astros ace Justin Verlander is scheduled to return from the injured list and will start Friday against the A's.DETROIT — Astros ace Justin Verlander is tentatively scheduled to come off the injured list and start Friday’s game against the Oakland A’s at Minute Maid Park.

Verlander played catch in right field at Comerica Park on Wednesday. He threw a bullpen session on Tuesday, after which he tested his injured calf with pitcher’s fielding practice. Verlander reported no issues, but deferred to the team any questions about when he may return. “We have an idea, but I don’t want to put that pressure on him or us until we know for sure,” manager Dusty Baker said prior to Wednesday’s game against the Tigers. “I think, right now, if he’s OK, he’s probably slated to go Friday.”

Verlander became eligible to return from the 15-day injured list on Wednesday, but the team always expected him to take a few more days. The 39-year-old righthander suffered aagainst the Baltimore Orioles. Verlander went on the injured list a day later. Baker did not immediately announce the rest of the team’s rotation for the four-game series against Oakland.
