Jose Altuve, slated to be the Astros' DH on Tuesday, was instead scratched from the lineup about 90 minutes before first pitch against the Rockies.Jose Altuve was a late scratch from the Astros’ lineup for Tuesday’s game against the Rockies at Minute Maid Park. The Astros did not give a reason when they announced the change about 90 minutes before first pitch and said they would provide one later in the day.
Altuve was originally in the lineup batting leadoff as the designated hitter, but he appeared to injure himself during pregame batting practice and left the field with Astros bench coach Joe Espada. The second baseman missed two games with a sore heel earlier last week, one in Los Angeles and one in St. Louis, but returned and played in the last six games of the Astros’ road trip that ended Monday.
Altuve missed the team’s first 43 games of the season recovering from a broken thumb suffered during the World Baseball Classic this spring. He returned May 19 and has since played in 32 games, 31 of them starts at second base, while slashing .265/.371/.479 with 18 RBI and six home runs. Altuve also missed four games in early June with an oblique injury
With Altuve out of the lineup against the Rockies, Mauricio Dubón led off and started at second base. Corey Julks moved into the lineup to bat second as the designated hitter. Grae Kessinger, who was initially slated to play second base, moved to shortstop and remained No. 9 in the batting order.
