Houston Astros pitcher Lance McCullers Jr. throws a live BP session before a MLB game at Minute Maid Park on Tuesday, July 5, 2022, in Houston. The chants have been absent since 2019, when Alex Bregman made a late-season push to unseat Mike Trout from his perpetual place atop American League Most Valuable Player voting. They resumed from the upper deck Tuesday night at Minute Maid Park, the sight of a strange game this ballpark’s newest superstar needed to stabilize.
The chorus began between both displays of Alvarez’s prowess. First it felt like a faint roar from a few well-served fans. It came to a crescendo after Alvarez’s home run landed in the Crawford Boxes. While he rounded the bases, Chas McCormick and Jake Meyers came to the top step of Houston’s dugout, waved their hands and asked to hear it louder.
July is just five days old. The baseball season has three more full months. Handicapping Alvarez’s chances at an end-of-season award before the All-Star break is foolish. So much can happen between now and when voting begins before the playoffs. Metrics do not paint Alvarez as a good left fielder. He is worth negative-three outs above average, according to Baseball Savant. Only three qualified left fielders are worse. The Astros do not need him to be a Gold Glover — nor does he need to play like one to capture MVP honors — but more time out there can only help his candidacy.
