Astros insider: Offense missing amid busy schedule
United States Latest News, United States Headlines

The Astros have scored two or fewer runs in 15 of their first 43 games.

Cleveland Guardians center fielder Myles Straw laughs with teammates before an MLB game against the Houston Astros on Monday, May 23, 2022, at Minute Maid Park in Houston. The Astros appear tired. Thirty-three games in 34 days is enough to fatigue any club.

The fundamental mistakes they made on Monday furthered the thought, one their manager vocalized after the game. All teams have this sort of grueling stretch somewhere in their schedule. Most circle it during spring training and brace for the impact. Dusty Baker acknowledged he did precisely that. His team had handled the difficulty well. It entered Monday 21-9 during the 33 games in 34 days. It exited with a whimper.6-1 loss to the Cleveland GuardiansBoth Luis Garcia and Jeremy Peña committed throwing errors that extended innings and led to runs. Half of Cleveland’s six runs were unearned. Houston still has the best defensive team in baseball. Even it is allowed a bad day, especially in such a tough grind of games. “I wouldn’t say it’s the games, no,” said Alex Bregman, who provided the only sign of life with a seventh-inning solo home run. “I think we just got beat tonight. You tip your hat to them, come back tomorrow and get ready to go. The guys in here do a great job of turning the page and get back after it the next day.” Monday did further a trend that predates this part of the schedule. The Astros scored once. They’ve scored two or fewer runs in 15 of their first 43 games. Houston had 38 such instances last year, a season it boasted baseball’s highest-scoring lineup. Eight of the nine everyday starters from that team have returned. The run production has somehow plummeted. The Astros’ one-run display on Monday lowered their scoring output to 4.20 runs per game. Last year, the team scored 5.33 runs per game. Two 11-run outbursts and a 13-run avalanche during the second game of the season are outliers, perhaps inflating the already anemic numbers. Houston has scored four or fewer runs in 27 of its first 43 games. Paired against the team’s offensive numbers, the paltry scoring is perplexing. Houston entered Monday’s game with a major-league leading 132 extra-base hits. Only one team — the Los Angeles Angels — had more home runs. The Astros also had the sport’s third-highest OPS+ and fifth-highest slugging percentage. Put another way, this is an above-average offense that fails to score at its potential. Before Monday’s game, the team had a .228 batting average with runners on base and hit .232 with runners in scoring position. Both batting averages rank 21st or below in the sport. Fifty-eight home runs can buoy the brutal batting averages, though, and give the Astros a more respectable OPS and slugging percentage in both categories. Before Monday’s game, their .763 OPS with runners in scoring position ranked 11th of 30 teams. Then they played and it plummeted.
