CHICAGO — After getting no-hit for four innings the previous night, the Astros appeared to ignite their offense right from the jump in Saturday’s game against the White Sox. Two first-inning singles by Alex Bregman and Kyle Tucker, followed by José Abreu’s two-out walk, loaded the bases and gave the Astros a chance to get to White Sox starter Dylan Cease early.
Instead, shortstop Jeremy Peña grounded into a forceout and snuffed out what would end up as the Astros’ most threatening moment of the night. Houston put just three more runners into scoring position for the rest of the game and went 1-for-6 in those at-bats, stranding eight men in a 3-1 loss to the White Sox.
“If you could hit every time that you wanted to hit, you'd never make an out,” Astros manager Dusty Baker said. “So you know, like I said, we're treading water. We got to just keep on fighting.” The Astros are averaging .220 in their last 13 games, the third-lowest average of any major league club in that span. They also have the lowest on-base percentage and second-lowest slugging percentage. Just 29 of their hits have fallen for extra bases, with nine home runs.“We’re coming along,” said Peña, who had three of those hits. “I feel like we've been playing better baseball and I think we’ll be good.
McCormick returned from a 20-game injured list stint last week only to go 0-for-4 in his lone game played before his back issues flared up again, and has missed four consecutive games since. And it does not seem prudent for the Astros to pin all their hopes on Altuve, who began a minor-league rehab assignment on Friday in Sugar Land, eight-time All-Star or not.
