Oakland Athletics' Tony Kemp steals second base as Houston Astros shortstop David Hensley jumps to avoid him during the ninth inning of a baseball game Saturday, Sept. 17, 2022, in Houston. Sixteen games remain for the Astros to assemble their postseason rotation. Two spots are taken by Justin Verlander and Framber Valdez. Two others are up for grabs and four pitchers have legitimate arguments to fill them.
“I’m leaving pitches right over the middle,” Urquidy said afterward. “I think that was something bad that I did, throwing offspeed very flat and right to the middle.” Urquidy’s changeup is one of his best secondary pitches. He throws it almost exclusively to lefthanded hitters, who entered play on Saturday slashing .216/.264/.361 against him with a .625 OPS. Righties, by contrast, had a.799 OPS against him.
“I think I need less miles per hour,” Urquidy said. “Right now it’s straight. I have to look for depth and run to the right side. I have to throw that pitch not too hard.”
