Astros insider: Cristian Javier making his case to stick in starting rotation

Orbit hits Seattle Mariners J.P. Crawford with a limbo pole before the start of the first inning of an MLB baseball game at Minute Maid Park on Tuesday, May 3, 2022 in Houston.Cristian Javier is cementing himself as one of the Astros’ best pitchers. General manager James Click continues to reiterate that he views the righthander as a starting pitcher in the long term. Soon, the theory may be tested.

Javier struck out only four. He did not have his best stuff — Seattle swung and missed just six times on 52 strikes — but the righthander yielded enough soft contact to allowing the Astros’ brilliant defense to work. A dreadful night by home-plate umpire CB Bucknor benefited him, too. A starting pitching surplus forced him to the bullpen. The Astros wanted to keep him stretched out as a starter and, thus, did not use him as a traditional reliever. His outings became few and far between — less frequent than someone of Javier’s prowess should pitch.
