is an anomaly, the sort of ambush that hadn’t happened in five seasons. Expecting that on a regular basis is not based in reality, but the way it transpired is what’s been absent for almost all of this season.
Gurriel is at his best when pulling breaking pitches to left field and poking fastballs to right. Many of Bregman’s problems this season stem from timing: when he’s late, he doesn’t hit the inside part of the baseball and can’t get the backspin he desires. His misses often result in rollover ground balls to the left side and lazy fly balls to right field.
Fixing Houston’s poor run production begins with both of them. Gurriel and Bregman are catalysts that have cratered for the first three months of this season. Manager Dusty Baker and the Astros have no plans of abandoning them any time soon — nor should they.
