ARLINGTON — Framber Valdez’s sharpest weapon was suddenly dull. Two misfired curveballs capped a 10-pitch plate appearance that ended with Valdez issuing his first walk of the game to Corey Seager in the bottom of the fourth inning.
Without his best pitch, Valdez gritted through six innings allowing just one unearned run on Monday with four hits, two walks, five strikeouts, one hit batter and a wild pitch. Even on a night when the Astros got a quality start from their rotation, the bullpen could not preserve it. Phil Maton gave up a game-tying run in the seventh inning on a pinch double, a fly ball and a ground-ball single through a drawn-in infield. Ryne Stanek allowed the Rangers to take the lead for good in the same inning on a wild pitch and single, and the Astros lost 6-2 to the Rangers in the series opener at Globe Life Field.
