Angels stars Shohei Ohtani and Mike Trout went a combined 0-for-6 with three strikeouts...

Houston Astros second baseman Jose Altuve and Yordan Alvarez during batting practice before the start of an MLB baseball game at Minute Maid Park on Friday, June 2, 2023, in Houston. In a matchup between two pitching aces, Framber Valdez and the Astros got the best of Angels phenom Shohei Ohtani as the Astros claimed a 6-2 win on Friday night.

Yordan Alvarez and Corey Julks each provided a two-run homer to catalyze the Astros offense. Kyle Tucker went 2-for-4 with an RBI, while Chas McCormick went 3-for-4. The Astros wasted no time capitalizing on the Angels’ mistakes. With one out in the first inning, Jeremy Peña turned a line-drive single into an extra base on Gio Urshela’s throwing error and went to third on a wild pitch by Ohtani. Alvarez smoked his 15th home run of the season, which traveled 408 feet and had an exit velocity of 107.7 mph, to give the Astros an early 2-0 lead.

That gave Houston plenty of insurance by the time reliever Phil Maton surrendered two runs in the eighth inning. Maton had allowed just two runs combined in his 23 prior appearances this season, though only one of the runs the Angels scored against him on Friday was earned. After the first inning, Houston’s next seven hits against Ohtani came with two outs.
