NASA astronaut Sunita Williams achieved a new record for the most spacewalk time by a female astronaut during her ninth spacewalk on January 30, 2025. Williams, stranded on the International Space Station (ISS) for seven months with fellow astronaut Barry Wilmore due to a propulsion leak, completed the spacewalk alongside Wilmore, surpassing Peggy Whitson's previous record. During the spacewalk, Williams captured an incredible selfie reflecting her spacesuit, the ISS, and the vast expanse of space. The astronauts also collected samples from the station's exterior to study the potential release of microorganisms into space.

On January 30, Williams completed her ninth spacewalk alongside Wilmore. In doing so, Williams broke the record for the most total spacewalk time by a female astronaut — surpassing the previous time held by former NASA astronaut Peggy Whitson. During this spacewalk, Williams captured a breathtaking selfie of herself — an image NASA calls “the ultimate selfie.”

“This memorable photo was taken during Williams’ ninth spacewalk, where she and fellow astronaut Butch Wilmore removed hardware from the station’s exterior and collected surface samples from areas near the Destiny laboratory and Quest airlock for analysis.”
