Sir Keir Starmer has said he believes the law should be changed but it will be left to parliament to decide

Starmer has committed to finding time for MPs to hold a debate and a free vote on the issue of assisted dying , stating that he believed it was time for the issue to be reconsidered.

Labour officials set out that a vote on assisted dying would be brought about by a private members’ bill being brought forward, with sufficient parliamentary time being granted by a future Labour government for the issue to be debated. MPs would be given a “free vote” on the matter, meaning they would not be bound to vote either for or against the policy according to the party whip
