Asset Forfeiture Unit freezes Theletsane 'syndicate' Eskom millions
At least R29 million in assets belonging to a syndicate that allegedly stole from Eskom by selling illegal electricity vouchers, have been seized by the Asset and Forfeiture Unit.The Asset Forfeiture Unit has frozen assets worth more than R29 million – including cars, properties and cash – belonging to a syndicate that allegedly stole from Eskom by selling illegal electricity vouchers.
According to National Prosecuting Authority spokesperson Lumka Mahanjana, the alleged ring leader, Mothelli Ben Theletsane, who has since died, was employed at Eskom on a contract basis and worked in the prepaid power environment, supporting Eskom's vending system. "He operated as a supervisor and obtained intimate knowledge of the operation of the voucher machines. He also acquired technical expertise on the ins and outs of the credit dispensing units . Moreover, during his employment, he also acquired, unknown to Eskom, a master vending unit, can generate limitless prepaid electricity vouchers and a few CDUs, which he concealed after his exit from Eskom," Mahanjana said in a statement.
