Assemblymember Barbara Haney filed an appeal in Fairbanks Superior Court on Monday, challenging the public rebuke that the assembly handed down to her July 26 on a 6-2 vote following an ethics complaint.
Assemblymember Barbara Haney makes her case July 25, 2024, as the Fairbanks North Star Borough Assembly considers penalties for an ethics violation finding against her.is continuing for the Fairbanks North Star Borough Assembly — except now, the debate is leaving the assembly chambers and heading over to the Alaska Court System.
The assembly voted 6-2 to formally censure Haney at that July meeting, electing to fine her one dollar and asking that Haney receive additional ethics training within two months of the decision. Haney said she sent the letter to the newspaper from her personal email address, which the News-Miner confirmed, but her letter did not include a disclaimer that she was writing in a personal capacity rather than representing the assembly.
The ethics board’s decision meant the assembly had to select and vote on punitive measures, which they did in the July 25 and 26 meeting.
