WikiLeaks cofounder Julian Assange has been jailed for 50 weeks for breaching bail conditions. The bid for his U.S. extradition is ongoing

Share to twitterWikiLeaks founder Julian Assange arrives at court in London on May 1, 2019 to be sentenced for bail violation. - Assange will be sentenced today for breaching a British court order seven years ago, when he took refuge in Ecuador's London embassy toWikiLeaks cofounder Julian Assange has been given 50 weeks in jail for breaking bail. It relates to an offense in 2012, when Assange took up asylum in the Ecuadorian Embassy, where he remained up until last month.

Prior to being sentenced today at London's Southwark Crown Court, Assange apologized for holing up in the embassy. According to, Assange wrote in a letter:"I found myself struggling through terrifying circumstances... I did what I thought at the time was best... which I hope will lead to a legal resolution between Ecuador and Sweden."

His defense also argued that he'd suffered greatly as a result of spending seven years in the embassy. His stay had been littered with illnesses, the defense argued, including depression. But Judge Deborah Taylor rejected the bid for leniency, saying the nature of Assange's offence merited close to the maximum sentence of 52 weeks.

There remains no update on the possible extradition to America, where Assange is wanted on a single charge for conspiracy to commit a hacking offence. The U.S. has alleged Assange offered to help intelligence leaker Chelsea Manning crack passwords that would've allowed her to access files under a military network account that was not her own.
