The ASIC commissioner’s warning follows the watchdog launching a landmark greenwashing case against retail superannuation giant Mercer.
“I suspect that [those investigations] will result in court action and if they don’t result in court action, they’ll result in certainly infringement notice action,” she said.
“It’s not only what they are saying to their clients around their investment portfolio, but actually, what are they telling the world around their corporation in their business as well?” But Ms Press said any funds making such claims needed to be able to back that up with evidence of how they were wielding that influence and whether it was effective.
