Ashley Judd on healing following sexual abuse, loss of her mother
Judd and Kessler said it's important for others to hear from someone currently grieving."It's scary to be vulnerable and transparent and to talk about acute grief and suffering in real-time," Judd said."And I certainly know that I do so in community with lots of other people who have had very visceral recent losses, and I hope that this can be something that is useful."
I think for the first 10 days, I was in high-functioning shock because there are all the things in our society that one attends to. … I've definitely experienced some denial in the form of just this numbness… I haven't experienced anger yet. I imagine it's in there. I don't think I'm exempt from the stages of grief. And I one-hundred percent have the depression.
"To make a long story short," she said,"we ended up in rocking chairs sitting by a creek together. And I said, 'I'm very interested in hearing the story you've carried all these years.' And we had a restorative-justice conversation about that." She added:"I wanted to share that story because there are many ways of healing from grief, and it's important to remind listeners that I didn't need anything from him, and it was just gravy that he made his amends and expressed his deep remorse, because healing from grief is an inside job."In times of uncertainty you need journalism you can trust.
