James Witham has admitted manslaughter but denies 28-year-old council worker's murder
Ashley Dale's killer shopped at Liverpool ONE and put £1,000 into his bank account two days after he shot her dead, her murder trial has heard. The Knowsley council worker died aged 28 after being shot in the abdomen and collapsing in the back yard of her home on Leinster Road, Old Swan, shortly after midnight on August 21 last year.
Jurors heard they later reappeared carrying drinks and food before checking out at 11am on August 23 and leaving in a taxi to Mr Peers' home. The jury was then played a series of CCTV clips captured in Liverpool city centre the same day, showing Witham and his son shopping and eating in a restaurant.
That evening, jurors heard, cell siting data showed Witham and Mr Peers' phones travelled north to Scotland. On August 26, the former attempted to book a double room for one night at the Village Hotel in Whiston. But the booking was unsuccessful as his Visa card was declined when used to make the £107.10 payment, the court was told.
Witham was then said to have returned to Scotland in the Audi Q7 on August 27, as evidenced by ANPR and cell siting data. Two days later, Mr Peers used his co-defendant's bank card to make a £250 withdrawal at the Post Office on Childwall Lane - followed by two further similar transactions, amounting to £250 and £150, on August 31, the court heard.
Witham, who had been seated in the rear, meanwhile gave officers a false name of 'Francis Kelly' and continued to take drags from his cigarette after being handcuffed, the court heard. When told why he was being detained, he shook his head and puffed out his cheeks, jurors were told.
