Asda has become the most expensive supermarket after refusing to drop the price of a key staple, knocking Morrisons off the bottom spot. Other supermarkets have reduced the price of butter, but Asda's bill for eight shopping essentials came to £12.79. Lidl remains the cheapest supermarket, followed by Sainsbury's and Aldi. Asda has consistently been at the bottom of the comparison since last year, except for 15 weeks.

Asda says the comparison is unfair and that the small sample of products doesn't give the full picture of prices. It says that as far as supermarket value ranges go, its Just Essentials is the largest and cheapest available, alongside Aldi's.
