ASD will hold another clinic for whooping cough vaccines on Sept. 25, 2024.ANCHORAGE, Alaska - The Anchorage School District held a vaccine clinic on Monday at Anchorage School District Education Center for students, faculty, staff and their families as it looks to help curb rising cases of pertussis within the district and surrounding area.
ASD will be holding another vaccine clinic on Wednesday from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. at the ASD Education Center. Pertussis, commonly known as “whooping cough,” is at a high in the state right now, with 215 cases reported across Alaska this year as of August. ASD has reported at least 29 cases within the school district alone.
While the disease is considered vaccine-preventable, the vaccine has “waning immunity,” according to ASD Director of Healthcare Services Kathy Bell. The DTaP vaccine, she explained, treats a combination of tetanus, diphtheria and pertussis, and is recommended for infants and young children. It is recommended that adults receive the Tdap vaccine to fight the same diseases. Updates are suggested every 10 years, or after five years in the event of an outbreak.violent coughing fitsIt is recommended that those who suspect they have pertussis, and those displaying symptoms in line with those of pertussis, see a health care provider as soon as possible and stay at home.
