Demonstrators protesting at the Texas State Capitol called for lawmakers to pass a bill to raise the minimum age for buying semi-automatic rifles reach the state house floor. After the 2012 shooting at a movie theater in Aurora, Colorado, the state enacted background checks for gun buyers. After the 2017 shooting at a Las Vegas concert, Nevada passed a so-called "red flag" law that temporarily takes away firearms if a court finds that person to be high risk. The 2018 Parkland shooting pushed Florida to raise the minimum age to buy a firearm.
One of those Republicans, Rep. Sam Harless of Spring, is not commenting on why. The other, Rep. Justin Holland of Rockwall said in a statement he was proud to have passed the permitless carry legislation during the last session and does not believe gun safety laws alone will prevent the violence. "This shift in the age at which one can purchase semi-automatic rifles comes with a potential political cost for any Republican lawmaker, and the fact that he had to be so tentative about that does show you the difficulty of the politics," Wilson went on to say.
