Finger: As Spurs stay silent, Primo questions won’t go away
Spurs rookie Josh Primo leaves the floor after defeating the Utah Jazz, 111-85 in NBA preseason action in the AT&T Center on Monday, Oct. 4, 2021. Primo scored 17 points.Gregg Popovich listened to the questions, each of them timely and fair. Then he responded the way other coaches in his position probably would, with the reticence everyone has grown to expect from his organization.
But that doesn’t mean we aren’t right to ask what the Spurs knew and when they knew it. In fact, the collective track record of professional sports teams, and of workplaces in general, demands it. In waiving Primo last Friday, before the public even learned about alleged incidents of indecent exposure, the Spurs took a proactive step to make sure they wouldn’t appear to be condoning that kind of behavior.
They should be lauded for that. Not every pro franchise — particularly not ones in small markets — would do the same. Did the Spurs learn about the first alleged incident before any subsequent ones occurred? If so, did they take any action to discipline Primo, or to ensure the safety of those working around him?
